A list of items I consider essential for starting out in college

Sleeping

• alarm clock - battery powered, won't have to worry about power outages
• 2 sets sheets
• 2 blankets
• mattress cover
• slippers

Hygiene

• 2 washcloths
• towel
• hand towel
• basic toiletries
• shower flip-flops
• minimal medicines (ibuprofen, tylenol, etc)

note: buy consumables once you get there

School Supplies

• 1 3-ring binder
• stapler
• 3-hole punch
• ruler
• desk lamp
• calendar
• surge protector
• knapsack/bookbag
• calculators (including a non-graphing for classes that prohibit them)
• envelopes and stamps

clothing

• your basics that are obvious, just don't overdo it
• pajamas
• raincoat
• broad-brimmed hat
• sunglasses
• clothes hangers
• small sewing/repair kit
• laundry bag - I like one for lights, one for darks
• hanger for your kilt (I'll send you one of my extras w/ speakers)

bike-related

• tool kit
• velcro trouser straps
• nylon straps to tie down large items to your rack

other

• checkbook - get one if you don't yet have one
• a couple of sets of plates, flatware, cups, mugs
• water bottle
• headlamp
• room decorations (photos, houseplant, etc.)
• portable radio
• massive 36-inch speakers and 5000W sound system
